Christmas Letter 2011

Greetings from Team Ketelsen!

We have had quite the year here in Northern Michigan. There is never a dull moment in the ministry or our lives.

In the Spring, Joshua had a bit of a health scare. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital with extreme dizziness, a severe headache, tingling in his hands, and difficulty speaking. The emergency room had several theories about what was causing Joshua's symptoms, but his general practitioner concluded that it was a severe migraine caused by high-blood pressure and stress. He was put on blood pressure medication and a strict low sodium diet. He had a check up in November and the doctor is pleased with how the diet and medication are working.

Joshua completed his second year of ministry at Holy Cross and has settled into a nice routine. He proudly confirmed his first confirmation class in July, a group of seven teenagers. He also had six baptisms this past year that, surprisingly, consisted of more adults than infants. Joshua has built friendships with several pastors in the Onaway area and in his regional circuit, and looks forward to the regular camaraderie of his Onaway Ministerial Association meetings, circuit meetings, and district conferences.

Stefani has been busy working with Holy Cross' preschool. She currently sits on the recently created school board. The preschool also hired her part-time to take care of various paperwork and administrative issues. She has really enjoyed learning more about the administrative aspect of running a school. Stefani also keeps busy leading the 456ers (the 4th-6th grade youth group), hanging out with the Junior/Senior High kids, and volunteering in various other capacities.

This summer we went on two major trips with the youth group. In June, we took ten high school students to the Michigan District Senior High Youth Gathering on Mackinac Island. We heard some great music, speakers, and participated in a servant event helping clean a church in St. Ignace. In August, we headed to the campus of Concordia University Ann Arbor for the Michigan District Junior High Youth Gathering. We took nine junior high kids. Again, we heard some great bands, speakers, and participated in a servant event helping the Detroit Rescue Mission. It never gets old seeing so many teens worship together and serve others.

The summer was full of visitors at the “Ketelsen Inn”. Joshua's mother and sister, Sarah, came to experience an Onaway 4th of July. In August, Stefani's parents took their vacation “Up North”. We were all able to explore parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that we had never visited before, including the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, Tahquamenon Falls, and the Soo Locks. September brought Joshua's aunt and uncle from Iowa and Stefani's Grandma and Grandpa Marrah. We always enjoy exploring Michigan with our guests, regardless of whether it is our old favorites or experiencing something new.

We want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

God's Blessings,
Joshua and Stefani

Super Bowl 2010

We decided to throw a small Super Bowl party. We two couples from church over for the big game. We ate corn chowder, fresh bread, bacon cheddar pinwheels, and other assorted goodies.

We rooted for the Green Bay Packers. This house is a Cleveland Browns house, so there was no cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Martin even got into the spirit. Stefani decided he needed to join in on the fun.

God's Blessings,

Joshua and Stefani

December 2010 (thus far)

December is a busy month around here. With Advent comes two services a week, which means two sermons and two services to plan.

The first Saturday in December Moran Iron Works puts on a winter event for the town. There is a huge bonfire, Santa, and fireworks. We took two carloads of youth to the event and then went back to church for pizza and games. Everyone had a good time.

The week before Christmas was a busy one. We had the children's Christmas program on Sunday. There were about 35 kids that participated. Stefani helped by running the music so the other music techs could watch their children and grandchildren participate.

Speaking of church music, as many of you know we do not have an organist. This means our music for service is all digital. We had an ancient laptop to play mp3s, until recently, when the church purchased a new computer.

It will be nice to have a reliable computer for the music.

On Monday, we had a couple from church and their young son over for dinner. It was good food and good conversation. This inspired us to decided to try to have one couple from church over for dinner once a month.

Tuesday was the 456er's (the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Youth group) Christmas party. We watched Linus tell the Christmas story, played games, made crafts, and ate pizza. The turn out was great with a total of 9 kids.

Wednesday Stefani went to visit a lady, Robin, from church whose ankle was basically reconstructed. Usually, it is Joshua doing the visiting, but Stefani had a feeling she would be need some company. While she was there Stefani was introduced the delicious recipe of Bugles dipped in melted white chocolate with an m&m stuck on it. Robin sent Stefani home with the ingredients...

And here is the final product. We ended up taking them to St. Louis to share.

That evening we had a game night with the High School Youth. We played Wii, Funglish, Sequence, and Uno. And what party is complete without pizza.

As you can see Christmas week was busy! We wouldn't have it any other way. (Ok, maybe we would like to spend it on a beach sometime.)

God's Blessings,

Joshua and Stefani

Thanksgiving 2010

Our Thanksgiving plans changed about a week and a half before the holiday. After about 4 months of unemployment Stefani's dad got a job. With the new job came no time off. We decided to take the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with Joshua's family for the first time. After many phone calls and discussions the plans were set. We loaded up the car and headed to Ohio on Thanksgiving day. Joshua's family from New York was to join us, so it was decided to have Thanksgiving dinner on Friday night to give everyone a chance to travel. The weather, however, decided not to cooperate and the folks from New York could not make the trip.

We had a great dinner with all the trimmings. Joshua encouraged Stefani to share the tradition her grandpa's oyster stuffing with the Ketelsens. Stefani also made green bean casserole and gravy. Everything was delicious!

The trip was short, but we enjoyed visiting with everyone.

God's Blessings,

Joshua and Stefani
